The Garden House is a classic colonial property, located in Ginigala Village, Habaraduwa. The accommodation was formerly a planter’s house, dating back to 1870. It has since been renovated to maintain its historical charm, while also fitting in modern amenities, to further enhance guests’ experience.
The Garden House itself accommodates four bedrooms (sleeping eight people), all of them still have the dark wooden furniture, kept in pristine conditions. All the bedrooms overlook the paddy field and also the villa’s swimming pool. A separate studio dwelling, named The Garden Cottage, houses the fifth bedroom, accommodating two more people. The Garden Cottage can be rented as an addition to the main house.
The villa is situated in a 1.5 acre tropical estate, which includes expansive garden areas. It takes around 25 minutes by car to reach the history-rich city of Galle. It takes around the same time to drive the other way to Koggala Lake. If you want to spend a day in the sand, the southern coast beaches are reachable by car or tuk-tuk mere minutes away from the villa.
Overall, The property offers five bedrooms, accommodating ten people. The main house consists of four bedrooms, plus ensuites. Three of them are located upstairs, furnished with canopy double beds (with mosquito nets draped on), wardrobe spaces, and ceiling fans. They all have balconies that face the beautiful paddy fields. The double-bed room downstairs features the same items, but with an air conditioner fitted instead of a fan. It leads into a private terrace, overlooking the pool area. The final bedroom, also furnished with a double bed, is located in the nearby studio accommodation, called the Garden Cottage.
Of course, being called The Garden House would imply that the property has expansive gardens, and it does! The accommodations sit on a 1.5-acre estate, filled with refreshingly green tropical gardens. Don’t forget the villa’s mesmerisingly-blue swimming pool that overlooks the paddy fields! You can enjoy this view while swimming, relaxing on the sun loungers, or even when lying in the many hammocks set in the main outdoor area. Make sure to have a meal at the alfresco table by the verandah at least once, so you don’t miss out on the experience of dining with a view of the gardens and the paddy fields.
The property owners take pride in the villa’s pristine interiors, some of which dates back to its colonial origins. The indoor areas’ floors are mainly made of dark wooden panels that contrast nicely with the building’s white walls, typical of colonial vintage style houses. The living room has a long and narrow layout, overlooking the front gardens. Exiting the other door will bring you to the small courtyard, where the concrete stairs will lead you to the three bedrooms.
A dedicated service staff will assist you with settling into this historical property. Tropical breakfasts will be provided every morning of your stay as part of your rental package. Additionally, you can order lunch and dinner from the experienced chef, for an extra cost. With the rental package, guests are also privy to complimentary wifi and cable TV services. There is off-street parking for your rental car, at no extra charges during your stay.
The Garden House estate is located in the Habaraduwa village of Ginigala. A 25-minute car ride from the property will bring you to Galle Fort, and also the city of Galle. If you prefer somewhere closer, the popular beaches on Sri Lanka’s southern coast are reachable in a few minutes’ trip, either by car or tuk-tuk. If you don’t feel like spending a day at the beach, why not visit a lake, instead? Koggala Lake, a 25-minute ride the opposite way to Galle, is one of the biggest lakes in the country. You should dine at a few of the lakeside restaurants, such as Joe’s Bungalow and KOLA Vegan Cafe & Restaurant. Alternatively, Dulmi Restaurant is only 130 metres away from the villa’s estate entrance.
