The calm seas of the legendary Bentota River, lagoon and Bentota Beach is great for snorkelling, swimming, diving, sailing, wind-surfing, water-skiing and deep-sea fishing on a traditional canoe, making it an attraction for families. Take a tour of the Galle Fort, a UNESCO Heritage Site and Asia’s largest remaining fortress built by European occupiers for a little history and culture lesson. Visit the beautiful Lunuganga Estate, the country estate of prolific Sri Lankan architect George Bawa to witness some architectural marvels. The Turtle Hatchery provides opportunity to release the day’s hatchling into the ocean aside from learning about turtle conservation. Time permitting travel inland to visit the Brief Garden, a magnificent 5 acres eco-park with a landscaped garden and open-air museum. Head into Bentota town and check out the Bentota National Holiday Complex which houses shopping, eateries and many other service including a Tourist Information centre. There are a wide array of souvenirs you can take home from Batik, traditional masks and handicrafts, clothes, brassware, wooden ornaments to semi-precious and precious gemstones.
