How You Can Reduce Your Carbon Emissions from Flights

Flying across destinations is amazing. It whisks us away to new adventures, connects us with loved ones, and opens up the world. But there’s also a not-so-amazing side to it: the carbon footprint.

Air travel is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to pumping out greenhouse gases. Those pesky flights account for around 2-3% of global CO2 emissions, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). And get this – emissions from flying have nearly doubled since 1990! Yikes.

But fear not, fellow jet-setters. You can still globe-trot while being a bit kinder to Mother Nature. It’s all about making savvy choices to trim that carbon footprint down to size, and we’re here to tell you how.

Small Changes, Big Impact: Your Guide to Eco-Friendly Flying

Fly Direct or Compare The Emission

Layovers might seem like a good way to break up a long journey, but all those takeoffs and landings are fuel guzzlers. Non-stop flights are the way to go for lower emissions (only when there’s an option, of course, and if it’s within your budget). Furthermore, not all flights are created equal—even on the same route, different aircrafts can have different emissions. A quick check on Google Flights can help you pick the greener option.

Embrace Economy

We all dream of sprawling out in first class, but flying economy is actually the more sustainable option. Business and first-class seats take up loads more room, meaning fewer people per flight, resulting in higher emissions per passenger. A 2019 report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) showed that a premium class passenger emits 2.6 to 4.3 times more CO₂ per kilometre than an economy class one, depending on the aircraft (ICCT, 2020).

Choose Airlines with Green Initiatives

Some airlines are actually trying to do better! Look for companies investing in fuel-efficient aircraft, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and carbon offset programs. Do a little research and support airlines that are aiming for net-zero emissions.

Pack Light

Every kilogram counts! The heavier the plane, the more fuel it burns. Studies show it takes around 0.2 kg of fuel to shift 1 kg of weight over 1,000 km. So if you think about it, all those passengers with overstuffed suitcases add up! Packing only the essentials helps reduce the aircraft’s overall weight, leading to lower emissions. Consider Alternative Transportation

For shorter distances, ditch the plane altogether and hop on a train or bus. By doing this, you can slash emissions massively. According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), train travel remains the most environmentally friendly mode of motorized passenger transport in Europe, emitting significantly less CO₂ per passenger-kilometer compared to air travel. (EEA, 2023).

Slow Down and Savor Each Destination

Instead of jetting off on multiple short trips, consider staying longer at one destination. Slow travel not only reduces your cumulative flight emissions but also allows you to experience local cultures more deeply.

Support Sustainable Tourism

Your impact doesn’t stop when you land! Choose eco-friendly accommodations, use public transport, and rent electric cars whenever possible. We even provide a list of eco-certified villas by third parties to help you choose your earth-friendly stay.

Offset Your Emissions (If You Can’t Avoid Flying)

Can’t avoid flying? Consider offsetting your carbon footprint by investing in programs that support reforestation, renewable energy, or community-based sustainability projects. Just make sure you choose a reputable program that’s verified by Gold Standard or Verra Certified Standards. You can also reach out to Sustainable Travel International for an easy way to offset your emissions.

Your Choices Matter: Fly Smarter, Not Less

Air travel is a major contributor to carbon emissions, but the way you fly can make a difference. By making thoughtful decisions—choosing direct flights, packing light, flying with sustainable airlines, and offsetting emissions—you contribute to a more responsible tourism industry.

Every step counts. Next time you book a trip, challenge yourself to travel in a way that’s better for the planet!
