Sustainability Report 2025: What Your Villa Stay Helped Support This Year

Villa Finder’s Sustainability Report 2025 is our look back at a year where good intentions became real, measurable action. We proved that sustainability should not be treated like a nice extra on the side of a villa holiday. It became part of how we worked, how we supported villa partners, and how we helped guests make more thoughtful choices.

And yes, this is still about beautiful villas, private pools, family breakfasts, sunset dinners, and holidays that make your group chat suddenly very active. But it is also about what happens behind the scenes: energy use, carbon emissions, waste, local communities, villa certification, employee well-being, and the natural places that make travel worth doing in the first place.

In 2025, Villa Finder achieved several big milestones:

  • We reduced our carbon emissions by 69% compared to our 2024 baseline
  • We installed solar panels that reduced on-grid electricity consumption by 72%
  • We supported over 100 short-term rental properties with sustainability improvements
  • We helped 28 villas obtain independent sustainability certification
  • We reached 31,083 trees planted through our “1 Booking = 1 Tree” initiative
  • Our team contributed 173 volunteer hours across environmental and social activities
  • Villa Finder became a certified B Corporation with a B Impact Assessment score of 80.9
  • We joined 1% for the Planet, committing 1% of our revenue to approved environmental partners
  • We lent around USD 21,550 through Kiva, supporting over 850 people

That is the headline version. The better story is how all of these pieces connect.

Because sustainability in travel is not only about doing one big thing and calling it a day. It is a chain of decisions. Some are very visible, like planting trees. Some are less glamorous, like improving carbon calculations. It can happen inside villas. Or inside our office. And in local communities.

Together, they help answer a simple question: when you book with Villa Finder, how is that holiday connected to something better?

The Year We Turned Sustainability Promises Into Progress

Villa Finder

In our 2024 report, we shared a roadmap. In 2025, Villa Finder started turning that roadmap into practice.

We signed the Glasgow Declaration and set 2024 as our baseline year, with a long-term goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2040. That baseline matters because sustainability needs a starting point. Without one, it is far too easy to say “we are improving” without knowing what improved, by how much, or where the biggest challenges still sit.

In 2025, we measured our emissions using Compare Your Footprint and in accordance with the GHG Protocol. We also improved the quality of our data by using more accurate inputs where possible, including actual weight data rather than relying solely on spending estimates.

Villa Finder’s sustainability work in 2025 focused on three connected areas:

  • Sustainable operations: reducing energy use, waste, and emissions across our company activities
  • Sustainability partners: helping villa owners and industry partners adopt better practices
  • Sustainability awareness: giving guests, owners, and our team clearer knowledge and practical ways to take action

This is where the story becomes more than a company update. It means the villa booking journey can become clearer and more responsible.

What Our 69% Carbon Reduction Really Means

One of the strongest achievements was our 69% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the 2024 baseline.

It is not a small adjustment. It means we made operational changes, improved how we tracked emissions, and started looking more closely at the parts of the business that create the biggest footprint.

The biggest changes included:

  • Installing photovoltaic solar panels at our office
  • Reducing on-grid electricity consumption by 72%
  • Limiting business travel, especially flights
  • Improving emissions calculations with more accurate data
  • Continuing food waste composting with Urban Compost
  • Working with responsible local waste management partners to upcycle waste

Solar energy played a major role. Our office solar panels fulfilled around 75% of our monthly electricity needs, reducing our reliance on the grid and making daily operations cleaner.

The report also showed the sources of our Scope 3 emissions in 2025. Total Scope 3 emissions reached 57.52 mtCO2-eq, with business travel being the largest contributor.

Here is the breakdown:

  • Business travel: 66.4%
  • Fuel-and-energy-related activities: 19.4%
  • Employee commuting: 10.3%
  • Purchased goods and services: 3.1%
  • Waste generated in operations: 0.9%

For emissions we could not avoid in 2025, we offset 100% of our estimated emissions through credible carbon offset projects certified by leading standards, including Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard. One of the projects we supported was the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Borneo, Indonesia, which helps protect a carbon-rich peat swamp forest, supports biodiversity, protects endangered orangutans, addresses deforestation, and improves local livelihoods.

The key point is this: offsetting was not our shortcut. We reduced first, then offset the remaining emissions.

That is the difference between treating sustainability as a nice sentence and treating it as actual work.

How We Made Certified Villas Easier to Find

Sustainable Certified Filter

A sustainable villa holiday should not require you to become a part-time detective. No one wants to open 25 tabs just to figure out if “eco-conscious” actually means anything.

That is why villa certification became such an important part of Villa Finder’s Sustainability Report 2025.

In 2025, we supported over 100 short-term rental properties in making practical sustainability improvements and connecting with independent certification bodies. Out of those, 28 villas obtained sustainability certification.

This matters because certification makes sustainability easier to understand. Instead of relying only on self-declarations, villa owners can work through recognised frameworks and show guests what has actually been done.

Villa Finder continued to support EnviroRental, which provides helpful resources for short-term rentals looking to become greener. We also worked with Sustonica, a sustainability standard designed for vacation rentals. On top of that, Villa Finder became a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and joined Asia Sustainable Travel, helping align our actions with recognised sustainable tourism standards.

The result is more useful for guests and more motivating for villa owners.

For guests, certified villas are easier to spot. We added badges and detailed sustainability information to villa listings so you can better understand what each villa is doing. Certified villas also received an algorithmic boost on the Villa Finder website, helping them rank higher in search results.

This creates a stronger reason to take sustainability seriously for villa owners. Better practices can lead to better visibility, stronger trust, and a clearer story for guests who care about how their stay is managed.

Overall, this helps raise the standard. More villas improving their energy, waste, sourcing, and compliance practices can create a wider positive effect across the local hospitality ecosystem.

Why “1 Booking = 1 Tree” Still Matters

Some sustainability actions are new. Some are long-running commitments that keep growing, quietly and steadily.

Villa Finder’s “1 Booking = 1 Tree” initiative has been part of our company since our very first reservation in 2012. By 2025, the programme had helped plant 31,083 trees across Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Lombok.

The idea is simple: every booking plants one tree. You book a villa, and somewhere, roots go into the ground. It is one of the nicest things a booking confirmation can do, aside from making everyone in the group suddenly start packing mentally.

The programme focuses on regions affected by environmental degradation, including mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves are especially important because they help:

  • protect coastal communities from erosion
  • support biodiversity
  • maintain healthy fisheries and coastal resources
  • restore damaged ecosystems
  • store carbon in roots and surrounding soil

This is why the tree count matters. The number is not just a nice milestone. It represents long-term restoration work in places that need care.

We also work with local organisations and communities to ensure planting occurs in suitable locations and that ecosystems receive ongoing attention. That part matters because responsible tree planting is not just about putting seedlings into the ground. It is about choosing the right places, working with the right people, and helping the trees survive.

How Our Team Supported Local Communities in 2025

Social Engagement in 2025

A sustainability report should never be only about carbon. Travel is built by people, and the places people love are held together by communities.

In 2025, our team contributed 173 volunteer hours across environmental and social initiatives. These activities included:

  • beach clean-ups and waste separation with Sungai Watch
  • teaching underprivileged children
  • donating laptops with Bali Street Mums
  • dog walking with BAWA Foundation
  • cooking and distributing food with Ragam Foundation

These are practical, human actions. They may not always make the loudest headline, but they matter because destinations are not just scenery. They are home to people, families, animals, small businesses, workers, and local organisations doing important work every day.

Villa Finder also continued supporting Kiva, a nonprofit that helps underserved entrepreneurs and communities access microloans. To date, our team has lent around USD 21,550 through Kiva, supporting over 850 people.

We also continued building a more inclusive internal culture. In 2025:

  • our team represented 6 nationalities
  • 62% of employees were women
  • 61% of leadership positions were held by women
  • our team satisfaction score reached 4.11

Villa Finder also maintained policies and programmes supporting equal employment opportunity, anti-bullying, anonymous feedback, mental health awareness, employee well-being, and open communication.

What B Corp and 1% for the Planet Mean for You

B Corporation

Two of Villa Finder’s biggest 2025 milestones were becoming a certified B Corporation and joining 1% for the Planet.

In July 2025, Villa Finder became a certified B Corporation with a B Impact Assessment score of 80.9. The usual median score for businesses completing the assessment is 50.9, so this was a meaningful achievement for us.

B Corp certification assesses how a company performs across areas such as governance, workers, community, customers, and the environment. It does not mean a company is perfect. It means Villa Finder has been independently assessed and has committed to higher standards of accountability and transparency.

We also joined 1% for the Planet in 2025. This means Villa Finder donates 1% of revenue to approved environmental partners.

Revenue, not profit. That detail matters because it makes environmental giving part of the business model, not something that only happens when there is extra budget left at the end of the year.

For anyone planning a villa stay, this means you are not only choosing a place to sleep. You are choosing the kind of company you want your holiday to support.

What Villa Finder is Working on Next

A good sustainability report should not end with a victory lap. The real question is: what happens next?

In 2026, Villa Finder’s goals focus on better reporting, stronger partner support, clearer compliance guidance, and more community engagement.

For sustainable operations, we aim to reduce carbon emissions to 100 MTCO2-eq and calculate emissions by activity for a more precise report. This will help us track progress more accurately.

And we plan to engage with larger stakeholders to increase impact and assist villa partners in achieving regulatory compliance in Bali.

For sustainability and compliance awareness, our goal is to provide regular guidance to villa partners and clearer information to clients in each destination.

Also, for social engagement, Villa Finder aims to:

  • improve team satisfaction score to 4.2
  • improve guest satisfaction score to 4.8
  • prepare for B Corp recertification
  • complete 1% for the Planet certification
  • support more staff volunteering for environmental and social communities

These goals are practical, which is exactly why they matter. Sustainability is not one grand speech. It is a long series of better decisions, repeated often enough to become part of how a company works.

Villa Finder’s Sustainability Report 2025 shows meaningful progress, but it also shows that our journey is still moving. There is more to measure, more to improve, more villas to support, and more guests to help.

That is the kind of sustainability story worth following.

A Better Holiday, With Better Roots

Villa Finder’s Sustainability Report 2025 tells a story of progress. A 69% carbon reduction. Over 31,000 trees planted. More than 100 villas supported. 28 villas certified. 173 volunteer hours. B Corp certification. 1% for the Planet.

But more than that, it shows how a villa holiday can be part of a better travel story.

A story where comfort and care can sit at the same table. Where a private pool and a planted mangrove do not feel like opposites. Where families, friends, couples, solo guests, and remote workers can enjoy a beautiful stay while knowing there is more happening behind the scenes.

We are still learning, improving, and working toward bigger goals. But 2025 proved that better villa holidays are not just possible. They are already taking root.
